How do you handle the guilt of enjoying something when you're still struggling financially?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of guilt creeping in when we allow ourselves to enjoy something, especially when finances are tight. It can be like a little voice in our heads saying, “How can you treat yourself when you’re struggling?” This internal battle can feel so isolating, and it’s tough to navigate those emotions while also wanting to find joy in life. One thing that has helped me is reframing what "enjoyment" means. Sometimes, it’s about finding little pleasures that don’t break the bank. For example, I’ve started to appreciate nature walks or cozy nights in with a good book. These moments allow me to recharge without the financial strain. And you might find that sharing these experiences with someone who understands—like a friend or even a fellow community member—can amplify the joy. We’ve started going on budget-friendly adventures together, which makes it feel less like a guilty treat and more like a shared experience. Another approach some of us try is budgeting for small indulgences. It’s about giving ourselves permission to spend a little, even when it feels uncomfortable. Creating a “fun fund” where you set aside a small amount each week can help alleviate that guilt. Knowing that you’ve planned for it makes it feel less like splurging and more like treating yourself. Having someone to talk to about these financial challenges can also ease the burden. Many of us have found that sharing our struggles with others who get it can help us feel more balanced about enjoying life, even when times are tough. The guilt can still creep in, especially when we see others enjoying things we can’t afford, but remember, everyone's journey is unique. It’s okay to find joy in small things, and it’s okay to feel conflicted about it. Anyone else dealing with this? What are some ways you’ve learned to balance enjoyment with financial struggles? Sharing our experiences can really help lighten that load.
