Many of us know that feeling of guilt when we start to find a bit of stability or even success after struggling for so long. It can be overwhelming to enjoy things that once felt out of reach, especially when we remember our past struggles or see others still caught in that cycle. It’s a mix of gratitude and guilt, and navigating those emotions isn’t easy.
One thing that really helps some of us is acknowledging our journey. When we reflect on where we came from, it’s important to remind ourselves that our hard work and resilience are what brought us here. Journaling about our experiences can be a powerful tool. Writing down the challenges we faced and how far we’ve come can help to validate our feelings and minimize that guilt. It’s like giving ourselves permission to feel proud without dismissing the struggles of others.
Another approach that has worked for many of us is finding ways to give back, whether it’s through volunteering or simply sharing our knowledge with others who are still in difficult situations. When we connect with someone who’s facing similar challenges, it can shift our perspective. I remember meeting someone who was still in a tough spot and, by sharing my story, I felt a sense of purpose. It reminded me that we can uplift one another, and that our success doesn’t diminish anyone else’s struggles.
We also need to be gentle with ourselves. It’s okay to enjoy our current circumstances while still feeling empathy for others. Many of us have learned to celebrate our achievements as a way to honor our past, rather than feel ashamed of them. Finding a small group of friends or peers who understand this journey can be really helpful. Just having a few people who get it can lighten that load of guilt and provide a safe space to share our feelings.
Anyone else grappling with this? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands what we’ve been through can change everything. What has helped you cope with these feelings?
