Many of us know that creeping doubt all too well—the nagging feeling that our trauma isn’t “valid” compared to what others have experienced. It can be tough when we hear stories that seem more intense or painful, making us question our own struggles. I think it’s important for us to remember that trauma is deeply personal. Just because someone else’s experience looks different doesn’t mean ours isn’t valid.
One thing that has helped me is journaling about my feelings. Writing it down can create a safe space to process what I’m going through. I often find that once I put my thoughts on paper, they don’t seem as overwhelming. It’s like giving myself permission to feel what I feel, without needing to measure it against anyone else’s experience. Sometimes, I even share snippets with someone I trust, which has led to some meaningful conversations.
Another approach that’s been comforting is connecting with others who understand. Finding a small group or even just one person to talk to about our experiences can make a world of difference. I remember sharing my doubts with someone in a similar situation, and just hearing, “I feel that way too,” was so validating. It helped me realize we’re all navigating our own unique paths, and that’s okay.
Also, I’ve started practicing self-compassion. When those thoughts of comparison creep in, I try to remind myself that healing looks different for everyone. It’s okay to acknowledge my own pain without diminishing the pain of others. We’re all walking our own journeys, and it’s perfectly valid to honor our feelings, no matter how big or small they may seem.
So, how do you cope with those feelings of doubt? Anyone else feeling this way? Sometimes just talking about it can lighten the load a bit.
