How do you cope with the judgment from others when they don’t understand your trauma?

Many of us know the sting of judgment from others when they just don’t understand our trauma. It can feel isolating and frustrating when we’re trying to navigate our own healing process, only to be met with skepticism or dismissive comments. It’s like carrying a heavy weight, and then having someone question why we even have that weight in the first place.
One thing that has really helped me is finding ways to ground myself when I feel that judgment coming on. For example, when someone makes a comment that feels hurtful or belittling, I try to take a deep breath and remind myself that their perspective is limited. They don’t know what I’ve been through, and that’s okay. Sometimes, just acknowledging that their comments reflect their lack of understanding rather than my worth helps me feel a little lighter.
Another approach some of us have found useful is seeking out supportive communities, like this one. Having even one person in your life who truly understands the complexities of trauma can make a world of difference. When I connected with someone who has a similar background, we started sharing our experiences regularly. It was comforting to talk openly without fear of judgment, and that connection helped me navigate the tough moments when I felt overwhelmed by others' lack of understanding.
It's also important to remember that our trauma is valid, no matter how others perceive it. We might find strength in journaling about our experiences or expressing our feelings through art. This can be a powerful way to process our emotions and reclaim our narratives. Plus, sharing our creations with someone who gets it can help us feel seen and validated.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands what we’re going through changes everything. I’d love to hear what’s helped you cope with judgment from others.
