How do you cope with people who dismiss your trauma as "not that bad"?

It can be incredibly frustrating when people brush off our trauma as "not that bad." Many of us have felt that sting when sharing our experiences, only to be met with dismissive comments or looks of confusion. It’s like they don’t see the depth of what we’ve gone through, and it can feel pretty isolating.
One thing that’s helped me is to remind myself that everyone has a different threshold for understanding trauma. While it might seem trivial to someone else, it’s profoundly impactful for us. When I feel dismissed, I try to take a step back and think about how I would explain my feelings to someone who genuinely wants to understand. This has not only helped me articulate my experience better but has also led to some deeper conversations with friends who were willing to listen.
Finding a safe space to share our stories can also be a game changer. Connecting with others who have experienced similar dismissiveness can validate our feelings. I remember finding a group of folks who really got it – we started sharing stories and supporting each other. Just knowing that I wasn’t alone in feeling minimized made a huge difference. If you haven’t already, reaching out to someone who understands what we’ve faced can be incredibly comforting.
Another approach I’ve tried is setting boundaries around conversations about my trauma. If I sense someone is going to dismiss my experience, I might steer the conversation elsewhere or simply say I’d rather not discuss it with them. It’s not easy, but protecting our emotional space matters. We deserve to be heard and honored.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference — what’s your experience been like?
