How do you cope with triggers that pop up unexpectedly during the day?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We've all been there — just going about our day when suddenly, a trigger hits us out of nowhere. It can feel like the ground just dropped from beneath us, leaving us reeling and overwhelmed. Many of us know that feeling all too well, and it can be incredibly tough to navigate. But we also have some strategies that have helped us cope in those moments. One thing that has helped me is grounding techniques. When a trigger sneaks up on us, taking a moment to focus on our surroundings can be grounding. For example, I often find it helpful to pause and name five things I can see, four things I can touch, three things I can hear, two things I can smell, and one thing I can taste. This simple exercise can pull us back into the present moment, reminding us that we're safe right here, right now. Another approach some of us try is having a go-to list of calming activities. It could be a playlist of our favorite songs, a comforting TV show, or a short walk outside. Having these tools at the ready means we can act quickly when a trigger hits. I’ve found it helpful to share my list with someone who understands what I’m going through, and sometimes just knowing someone else is in my corner makes it easier to manage those intense feelings. It can also be beneficial to create a signal or code word with a friend or a supportive person in our lives. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, you can send them a quick message letting them know you need a moment. I did this with a friend, and it’s been such a relief to know I have someone who gets it and can check in with me when those unexpected moments arise. Anyone else dealing with this? It can be isolating when triggers pop up, but sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference. We'd love to hear what strategies you've found helpful!
