How do you navigate the expectations placed on you by family and your community as an Osu?

Navigating the expectations from family and community as an Osu can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know the pressure to conform to traditional roles and responsibilities, and it can be overwhelming. Those moments when we feel the weight of our identity and the expectations placed upon us can leave us feeling isolated, especially when we’re trying to balance our personal truths with what’s “expected” of us.
One thing that has helped me is finding a small group of fellow Osu who understand these unique challenges. Just having a few conversations with them about our experiences has made a huge difference. We share our stories, and it’s so validating to hear that others also feel torn between honoring our heritage and living authentically. Connecting with even one person who gets it can ease that sense of loneliness.
Another approach some of us try is setting small boundaries. It’s okay to gently communicate our feelings or limitations with family members. It might start with something simple, like explaining that we need to prioritize self-care or that we’re exploring our own paths. It’s not always easy, but those little steps can help shift the dynamics and create more understanding.
Many of us also find it supportive to engage in community events that celebrate our identity as Osu. Whether it’s cultural festivals, workshops, or online meetups, being around others who share our experiences can reinforce our sense of belonging. It’s a reminder that we’re not alone in this struggle and that our identities are valid and worthy of celebration.
Anyone else navigating these family expectations? It can be tough, but sometimes just sharing those experiences with someone who truly understands can make everything feel a little lighter. What has helped you cope with these pressures?
