Many of us know the struggle of navigating social situations when people have misconceptions about being Osu. It can be tough when others don’t fully understand our experiences, and we often find ourselves in awkward or frustrating conversations.
One thing that helps is approaching these moments with patience and a bit of humor. When someone makes an offhand comment, like assuming we’re just shy or that we don’t want to engage, it can be tempting to react defensively. Instead, I’ve found that gently correcting the misconception often opens up a more meaningful dialogue. For instance, saying something like, “Actually, it’s not that I don’t want to engage; it’s just that my energy levels are different,” can help others understand where we’re coming from.
Another approach that many of us have found useful is to share our experiences in smaller, more intimate settings. Sometimes, when we’re surrounded by familiar faces, it’s easier to explain what being Osu means to us. It can feel less daunting to have these conversations with a couple of friends who already care about us. Plus, connecting with others who share our identity can be incredibly validating. For instance, I started meeting with a few other Osu folks, and we’ve created a safe space where we can talk openly about how we handle misconceptions together. Just knowing you’re not alone in this can make a world of difference.
And let’s be real — it’s not always easy. There are days when the misunderstandings weigh heavy on us, and it feels like we’re constantly educating others. But finding even one person who gets it can lighten the load. Those conversations can remind us that we’re not defined by others’ misconceptions; our experiences are valid, and we deserve to be understood.
Anyone else dealing with this? How do you handle those moments when people just don’t get it? Sharing our stories can really help us feel more connected and supported.
