How do you navigate family expectations when they don’t understand your experiences as an Osu?

Navigating family expectations can be really tough, especially when they don’t fully understand what it means to be an Osu. Many of us have faced situations where our families hold onto traditional views or have misconceptions about our experiences, which can feel isolating and frustrating.
One thing that helped me was having open and honest conversations with my family, even when it felt daunting. I started by sharing my personal stories and explaining what being an Osu means to me. It wasn’t easy, and there were times they didn’t fully grasp my perspective, but I found that taking small steps made a difference. For instance, I would focus on one aspect at a time – like discussing feelings of belonging or isolation linked to being Osu – rather than overwhelming them with everything at once.
Another approach some of us try is finding allies within our families who can support us during these conversations. Maybe you have a sibling or cousin who gets it and can help bridge the gap with other family members. Having even one person in your corner can make it feel less intimidating when you’re trying to explain your experiences. I remember when I had a family gathering, I brought up the topic casually, and my cousin chimed in with her own experiences, which opened up the floor for a more understanding conversation.
It can be a real challenge when family expectations feel at odds with our identities. Sometimes their love is wrapped up in their own traditions and fears, and it’s important to remember that their journey of understanding is different from ours. It’s okay to set boundaries too; we don’t have to meet every expectation if it compromises our well-being.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just sharing our experiences with someone who totally gets it makes all the difference. I'd love to hear what strategies you've found helpful!
