Does anyone else struggle with feeling accepted within both Ohu and non-Ohu communities?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Does anyone else feel like they’re caught between two worlds? Many of us who identify with Ohu descent often grapple with that sense of acceptance — feeling like we don’t quite fit in either the Ohu community or the broader non-Ohu community. It can be tough, especially when it seems like there are so many expectations from both sides. One thing that has helped me is finding small ways to connect with others who share our experiences. When we get together, even virtually, it creates a space where we can talk openly about our feelings of belonging (or lack thereof). It’s comforting to share those moments when we felt dismissed or misunderstood, whether it was at family gatherings where our Ohu identity wasn’t acknowledged or in wider circles where we felt like outsiders. Just knowing we’re not alone in these feelings can lighten the load. Another approach some of us have tried is to engage with both communities on our own terms. We might choose to share parts of our Ohu identity with friends outside our community, crafting our narrative in a way that feels authentic to us. It’s okay to educate others about our heritage, and sometimes, those conversations can lead to deeper connections. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this duality can make a world of difference. And let’s not forget the complexities of cultural nuances. Many of us have experienced moments where we felt we had to choose sides, whether it was being asked to prove our Ohu identity or feeling pressure to assimilate into the larger culture. It’s challenging, but finding allies in both spaces who respect and acknowledge our unique position can help us navigate these feelings of acceptance. So, does anyone else relate to this struggle of feeling accepted within both Ohu and non-Ohu communities? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can change everything — I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you feel more at home in either space.
