What are some cultural expectations you feel pressure to meet within your family?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations within our families can feel like walking a tightrope, especially for those of us from Ohu descent. Many of us experience the pressure to uphold traditions, meet familial expectations, and maintain a certain image that sometimes feels impossible to balance with our own identities and desires. One thing we might feel is the weight of expectations around education and career paths. Many families place a high value on specific professions, and it can be hard to feel like we're letting them down if we choose to pursue something different. I know I’ve felt this tension myself, wanting to honor my family's hopes while also following my own passion. It can feel isolating, but sharing these feelings with someone who understands can make a huge difference. Another pressure we often face is around family gatherings and events. There’s often an unspoken expectation to attend and participate fully, even if it feels overwhelming or if we’re struggling with our mental health. Some of us find that connecting with others in the community who also feel this pressure helps. I started talking to a friend who gets it, and we often check in about our feelings before family events. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone in feeling this way. And let's not forget the expectations tied to cultural practices and rituals. Sometimes, it feels like we have to navigate a fine line between honoring our heritage and figuring out what parts we want to carry with us into our lives. Talking to others who have walked this path has really helped me find my own balance. We share stories about what traditions feel meaningful to us and which ones feel like they weigh us down. Anyone else feeling this pressure within your family? It can be so helpful to find even one person who understands your unique struggles. What’s your experience with these cultural expectations?
