How do you handle moments when people make assumptions about your background?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever been in a situation where someone made an assumption about your background, and it felt like a punch to the gut? Many of us in the Ohu descent community know that feeling all too well. It can be frustrating when people jump to conclusions based on stereotypes or generalizations, completely missing our unique stories and experiences. One thing that helps is finding ways to express our true selves in those moments. For example, if someone assumes something about your cultural practices, gently sharing your perspective can open up a dialogue. You might say, “Actually, my family has a different tradition that’s really important to us.” It’s not always easy, but asserting our identity can help shift the conversation. Another approach some of us try is to lean on humor when it feels appropriate. Sometimes a light-hearted comment can diffuse tension and make it easier to steer the conversation in a more positive direction. If someone makes a sweeping assumption, a friendly, “Wow, if only it were that simple!” can invite curiosity and maybe even a laugh. It reminds them that our backgrounds are rich and complex. Connecting with others who share our experiences can also be a game-changer. Having even one person in your life who truly understands the challenges of being part of this community makes a world of difference. I found someone nearby who deals with similar assumptions, and we started talking regularly. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone, and we can share strategies on how to handle these moments together. Navigating the assumptions others make about our backgrounds is tough, but sharing our stories and experiences can create understanding. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you handle those moments and what’s worked for you.
