How do you cope with situations that trigger your obsessions in public spaces?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling when we're in a public space, and suddenly our obsessions start to overwhelm us. It’s like a wave crashing in, and it can feel isolating, even when surrounded by people. Whether it’s the thought of germs at a café or the fear of something being out of place in a store, these triggers can really throw us off. One thing that has helped me is grounding techniques. When I feel that familiar spiral beginning, I try to focus on my surroundings. For instance, I might name five things I can see, four things I can touch, three things I can hear, two things I can smell, and one thing I can taste. This simple exercise pulls me back into the moment and helps reduce the intensity of my feelings. It can be tough, especially in crowded places where the noise and activity can amplify my anxiety, but having a few go-to techniques really makes a difference. Another approach some of us find helpful is having a buddy system. If you can, bring someone along who understands what you're going through. Just having that one person who knows the signs can be a game-changer. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I let my friend know, and we take a moment together—whether it’s stepping outside for fresh air or finding a quiet corner to regroup. The relief that comes from sharing that moment really eases the burden. Also, practicing self-compassion is crucial. Many of us beat ourselves up for struggling in public, but it’s important to remember that these feelings are valid. We’re navigating a world that often doesn’t understand our experiences, and that's a tough road to walk. Being gentle with ourselves when we face triggers can help us feel less alone in those moments. Anyone else dealing with similar triggers in public spaces? It’s tough, but sometimes just having a conversation with someone who gets it can lighten the load. Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
