How do you cope with judgment from others when your OCD routines impact daily life?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of judgment that can come from living with OCD. When our routines and compulsions start to impact daily life, it can feel like we’re under a spotlight, and all we want is to blend in. It’s tough when people don’t understand why we might need to check the door five times or wash our hands more than what seems “normal.” One thing that has really helped me is finding ways to communicate my needs to those around me. I started by explaining a bit about my OCD—just a few simple sentences about how certain routines help me feel safe. Many people want to understand; they just need a little insight. When I opened up to a close friend about my routines, it not only eased some of their judgment but also created a space where I felt comfortable sharing my struggles without fear. Another approach some of us try is focusing on self-compassion. It's easy to internalize the judgment of others and start feeling guilty or ashamed about our behaviors. I remind myself that my OCD is part of my journey, and it doesn’t define my worth. Practicing mindfulness helps me to stay grounded and pushes back against that nagging voice of judgment. Connecting with others who really get it makes all the difference too. I found someone in my area who also deals with OCD, and we started meeting regularly. Sharing our experiences has been a game-changer for me. Knowing that I’m not alone in this fight has made those judgmental moments feel less isolating. Anyone else navigating the judgment that comes with OCD? I'd love to hear your experiences and what strategies have helped you cope. Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything.
