How do you navigate the expectations of success from family while pursuing your craft?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Nyamakala community know the weight of expectations from our families when it comes to success. It’s often a balancing act between honoring our craft and meeting the aspirations that our loved ones hold for us. We might feel torn between pursuing our passionate artistry and the more conventional paths our families envision. One thing that has helped me navigate this tension is openly sharing my journey with my family. I started by showing them my work—whether it’s a piece of art, a crafted item, or a performance. Many of us find that when we explain the meaning and the passion behind our craft, it resonates with them. They begin to see not just a hobby, but a part of who we are. This connection can soften their expectations and help them understand that success isn't just about financial stability; it’s also about fulfillment and joy. Another approach some of us take is setting small, achievable goals that align with our craft. This can be as simple as participating in a local fair or collaborating with another artist. Sharing these milestones with our family can help them feel involved and invested in our successes, even if they don’t fit their traditional definitions of success. Having even one person in our corner who truly gets this journey can make a world of difference. I found a fellow artisan who understands these struggles, and we check in with each other regularly. It’s comforting to share our wins and challenges, which helps remind us of our worth beyond family expectations. Lastly, we can remind ourselves that our paths are unique. Many of us come from a lineage of artisans, and honoring that legacy might mean forging our own. Embracing our identity as Nyamakala can empower us to redefine what success looks like for ourselves, rather than simply following others' expectations. Anyone else grappling with family expectations while pursuing your craft? It can be tough, but sharing these experiences often lightens the load. What strategies have you found helpful?
