Navigating family expectations while pursuing my craft as a Nyamakala artisan

Many of us in the Nyamakala community know all too well the weight of family expectations when it comes to pursuing our craft. It can feel like a tightrope walk, trying to honor our artistic passions while also navigating the hopes and dreams our families have for us. It’s a complex dance between tradition and individuality, and it can get overwhelming.
One thing that really helped me was opening up communication with my family about my passion for being a Nyamakala artisan. At first, I was hesitant, fearing they wouldn’t understand or would see my craft as less valuable. But when I finally sat down and shared my journey—what it means to me, the cultural significance, and the joy it brings—I noticed a shift. They began to see my art not just as a hobby, but as a vital part of who I am. Having that conversation made it easier for me to pursue my craft without carrying the burden of guilt.
Another approach I found beneficial was setting small goals for myself that I could share with my family. Whether it was completing a new piece or participating in a local market, I made sure to involve them in my journey. Their support, even in small ways, created a sense of pride for all of us. It reminded me that I am not alone in this—our creativity is deeply rooted in our culture, and sharing it with them fostered a sense of connection.
Many of us know that the journey isn’t always smooth. There are days filled with doubt, moments of feeling like we’re not doing enough, or that we’re letting our families down by choosing this path. It’s tough, but finding even one person who understands our experience can lighten that load. I started connecting with other Nyamakala artisans, and just knowing I’m not alone made a world of difference. We share our struggles, celebrate our wins, and support each other through the highs and lows.
Anyone else navigating family expectations while pursuing your craft? It can feel isolating, but sometimes just talking about it with someone who gets it changes everything. What’s your experience been like?
