Navigating family gatherings when you feel disconnected from cultural traditions

Family gatherings can be a real mixed bag for many of us who feel disconnected from our cultural traditions. On one hand, there’s that warmth of being surrounded by family, but on the other, it can be overwhelming when you feel like an outsider in your own home. Many of us have experienced that moment when everyone is sharing stories or traditions that you just don’t connect with, leaving you feeling alone even in a crowded room.
One thing that’s helped me is finding small ways to engage without feeling like I have to dive into traditions that don’t resonate with me. For instance, I might bring a dish that represents my current experience or interests, rather than something traditional. This way, I’m contributing to the gathering in a way that feels authentic to me. Plus, it often opens up conversations with family members who are curious about what I’ve brought and why it’s meaningful to me.
Another approach that has worked for many of us is reaching out to a cousin or sibling who might feel the same way. I found someone in my family who shares my struggle with feeling disconnected, and we started checking in with each other before family events. Just having someone who understands can make the experience feel a bit less daunting, and sometimes we even set aside time to share our own stories or traditions that resonate with us.
It’s also okay to set boundaries. If certain conversations or traditions feel too heavy or uncomfortable, it's perfectly fine to excuse yourself or redirect the topic. Many of us have discovered that it’s possible to create our own space within these gatherings, where we can share our experiences without fear of judgment.
And remember, it’s completely valid to feel a sense of loss or confusion about your cultural identity. Finding ways to express that, whether through art, writing, or just talking it out with someone who gets it, can be incredibly healing.
Anyone else navigating these family gatherings and feeling that disconnect? Sometimes just sharing our experiences can be so validating. What’s helped you in these situations?
