Feeling the pressure to conform: How do you navigate expectations in social settings?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there, right? Standing in a room full of people, feeling that weight of expectation to fit in or conform. Many of us in the Non-tribal community know how tough it can be to navigate social settings where it often feels like everyone else has their roles and groups all figured out. It can feel isolating when our experiences and identities don't seem to align with the dominant culture or expectations around us. One thing that helped me was learning to embrace my own unique perspective. It took time, but I started to realize that my experiences — the ones that made me feel out of place — were also my strength. When I'm in a social setting, I try to focus on sharing my story in a way that feels authentic to me. This way, instead of trying to fit into someone else's mold, I create a space where my voice can be heard. Sometimes, just having one person respond positively to my story makes it all worth it. Another approach many of us find helpful is to seek out smaller, more intimate gatherings where we can connect with others who might feel just as out of place. I found someone who was also feeling the pressure to conform, and we began meeting up for coffee. Being able to share our experiences helped us both feel less alone and more empowered to be ourselves in larger settings. There’s something really comforting about knowing that someone else gets it, right? It’s also important to challenge those societal norms that can make us feel inadequate. When someone makes a comment that doesn't sit right with me, I try to remind myself that their expectations don’t define my worth. Sometimes, it means speaking up or simply choosing to walk away from conversations that feel draining. It can be difficult, but prioritizing our mental well-being is so crucial. So, how do you navigate the pressure to conform? Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what’s helped you find your voice in those tricky social situations.
