Navigating cultural expectations while trying to be true to myself as a Munda

Many of us know the struggle of trying to balance our Munda identity with the cultural expectations that seem to weigh heavily on our shoulders. It can feel like we’re constantly walking a tightrope, trying to honor our heritage while also carving out a space for our true selves. The pressure can be overwhelming, and at times, it really feels like we’re caught between two worlds.
One thing that has helped me is finding small ways to incorporate Munda traditions into my daily life without feeling stifled by them. For instance, I love cooking traditional dishes, but I also like to experiment with them. Mixing in some modern flavors or techniques has made cooking feel like an expression of who I am, rather than just a box to check off. Sharing these meals with friends—especially those who understand the cultural significance—has created a lovely bridge between tradition and modernity.
Another approach that many of us find useful is having honest conversations with family members. It’s not always easy, but expressing how certain expectations make us feel can lead to more understanding. For example, when I talked to my parents about the pressure to follow certain career paths, they were surprised to learn that I felt stifled. It opened the door for discussions about how I could honor our values in a way that felt authentic to me.
Connecting with others who share this unique experience has been a game changer too. I met someone through a local community group who was navigating similar challenges, and we began meeting regularly to talk about our experiences. Having that support has helped me feel less alone and more empowered to embrace both my Munda roots and my individual identity.
Does anyone else feel this push and pull between cultural expectations and being true to yourself? It can be tough, but sometimes just sharing these experiences with someone who gets it can lighten the load. What has your journey been like?
