Have you ever faced discrimination at work because of your Munda identity, and how did you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever felt that moment when you walk into a room, and the energy shifts because of who you are? Many of us in the Munda community have faced situations at work where our identity has been a barrier rather than a bridge. It's frustrating and often disheartening to deal with discrimination, especially when it feels like our culture and heritage are misunderstood or undervalued. One thing that helped me navigate these challenges was finding a supportive group of colleagues who share similar experiences. I remember when I first joined a team where I was the only Munda person. I felt isolated, and I started to notice subtle biases in how my ideas were received compared to others. It was tough, but I reached out to a couple of coworkers who I knew were also from marginalized backgrounds. Just talking about our experiences made me feel less alone. We even started a small lunch group where we discussed not only work but also how our identities shape our professional lives. That connection really boosted my confidence. Another approach some of us find useful is advocating for ourselves in those moments of discrimination. I had a situation where my contributions were overlooked during a project meeting. Instead of letting it slide, I calmly addressed it afterward, sharing how my perspective as a Munda individual brought value to the discussion. It wasn’t easy to speak up, but it helped me reclaim my voice and set a precedent for future conversations. And let’s be real: it can be exhausting. Many of us juggle the emotional labor of educating others about our identities while also trying to just do our jobs. Finding ways to recharge is essential. I often take short breaks to connect with my culture, whether it’s listening to Munda music or doing a quick meditation that reminds me of my roots. It’s a way to ground myself and remember that my identity is something to be proud of, not ashamed of. Anyone else facing similar challenges at work? Sometimes just sharing our stories with someone who understands makes all the difference. I’d love to hear what’s worked for you or any experiences you want to share.
