Navigating family expectations can feel like walking a tightrope, especially as a Midgan or Madhibaan. Many of us know the weight of our heritage and the cultural expectations that come with it. Balancing who we are with what our families hope for us can be tricky, to say the least.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to communicate openly with my family about my identity. It can be daunting, but expressing how I embrace my Midgan heritage while also carving out my own path has made a difference. Sharing stories about my experiences and how they shape my values has opened up some really meaningful conversations. Sometimes, just letting them in on my journey helps them understand me better.
Another approach some of us try is setting boundaries. It’s important to remember that it’s okay to say “no” to certain expectations that don’t resonate with who we are. For example, if there are traditional roles or career paths they envision for us, we might need to gently assert our own dreams. Having that clarity can be empowering, and it allows us to stay true to ourselves while still showing respect for our family's values.
Connecting with others who share this identity has also been a game-changer. Many of us have found support in each other, whether through online groups or local meetups. Having even one person in your life who truly understands the complexities of being Midgan or Madhibaan can make navigating family expectations feel a little less lonely. I met someone who was going through similar struggles, and we started chatting regularly — it changed everything.
Sometimes, just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you move through these challenges.
