How do you cope with the stigma associated with being Midgan/Madhibaan in your community?

Navigating life as a Midgan or Madhibaan can feel like walking on a tightrope, especially when it comes to the stigma we often face in our communities. Many of us have felt the weight of that judgment, whether it's in whispered conversations, social exclusion, or the pressure to prove ourselves constantly. It’s tough, and sometimes it can feel isolating.
One thing that has helped me is finding a small circle of friends who understand my experiences. Connecting with others who share our identity has made a world of difference. We talk about the challenges we face, and it’s a relief to share our stories without fear of judgment. Just having even one person who gets it can lighten that heavy load we carry. If you're not ready to talk to someone in person yet, consider reaching out online or in spaces where you feel safe.
Another approach some of us try is reframing the narrative. When we encounter ignorance or stigma, it helps to remind ourselves of our history and the resilience that comes with it. Embracing our identity with pride, even when the world feels unkind, can be empowering. For example, I’ve started sharing our culture’s rich traditions and stories more openly, which not only helps educate others but also strengthens my own connection to who I am.
It’s also important to set boundaries when we need to. If certain conversations or environments feel toxic, we can choose to step back or limit our exposure. Protecting our mental health is crucial, and sometimes that means prioritizing our well-being over trying to change minds.
I know it can feel overwhelming sometimes, but reaching out to others who understand can make navigating these challenges a bit easier. Anyone else dealing with this stigma? I’d love to hear how you've coped — your experiences might help someone else who’s feeling alone in this journey.
