Many of us in the Kurmi Community know how it feels to hold onto traditions that seem misunderstood or overlooked by those around us. Whether it’s a specific festival, a unique way of celebrating life events, or even everyday customs, these practices help shape our identity and connect us to our roots. But sometimes, it can feel isolating when others don’t understand the significance of these traditions.
One thing that has helped me is sharing these customs with friends and community members who are open to learning. For example, I’ve found that explaining the stories behind our festivals, like the rituals during Chhath Puja, not only helps them appreciate our culture but also allows me to reflect on why these traditions matter so much. When we take the time to share and celebrate together, it fosters a deeper understanding, and honestly, it feels good to see others engage with our culture.
Another approach many of us take is to create small gatherings where we can share our traditions with those who are curious. Whether it’s cooking a traditional meal together or inviting friends to participate in a family ceremony, these moments can be incredibly rewarding. I remember when I invited a few friends to join in the Makar Sankranti kite flying. The joy on their faces as they learned the significance of the day made me feel connected and validated.
However, I know it’s not always easy. Sometimes we might feel hesitant to share our culture for fear of judgment or misunderstanding. But I’ve found that even having one person who truly appreciates these customs can make a massive difference in how we feel about upholding them. The isolation can be tough, but reaching out and finding those who share similar experiences or backgrounds can help bridge that gap.
Anyone else navigating this journey? What traditions do you hold dear, and how have you shared them with others? It’s always inspiring to hear about the ways we connect through our cultural heritage!
