Navigating cultural expectations while trying to find my own identity as a Kurmi

Many of us know what it feels like to navigate the complex expectations that come with being part of the Kurmi community. On one hand, we have our rich cultural traditions and values that shape our identities, and on the other, there’s the pressure to fit into a mold that sometimes feels just too tight. It can be overwhelming, right? One thing that has really helped me on this journey is to carve out personal space where I can explore my identity without judgment. This could be journaling your thoughts or even creating a vision board that reflects what being a Kurmi means to you personally. It’s a comforting exercise that allows us to separate cultural expectations from our authentic selves. I’ve found that art or writing can help us articulate our feelings, especially when it feels like we’re caught between worlds. Another approach many of us try is connecting with fellow Kurmis who are also navigating their identities. I started chatting with a few people in our community who shared similar struggles. We would meet up for tea and talk about our experiences—everything from family expectations to our own dreams. Just having those conversations made me realize I wasn’t alone in this. Sometimes just one genuine connection can help lift the weight of isolation that cultural expectations can create. It’s also important to recognize that our journeys are unique. Embracing that individuality can be a powerful tool. We can celebrate our heritage while also acknowledging the parts of ourselves that might not align with traditional values. For example, some of us might be pursuing careers or lifestyles that our families don’t fully understand, and that’s okay. It’s about finding that balance that feels right for us.
