How do you navigate family expectations while staying true to your Kunbi identity?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while staying true to our Kunbi identity can feel like walking a tightrope, can’t it? Many of us experience that tug-of-war between honoring our roots and following our own paths. It’s a constant balancing act, especially when our families have strong traditions and expectations that sometimes clash with our personal beliefs or lifestyles. One thing that has helped me is taking the time to have open conversations with my family about what being Kunbi means to me. Sharing my perspective on our rich cultural heritage and how I want to honor it in my own way can sometimes bridge the gap. For example, I often bring up our vibrant festivals and rituals, sharing how they make me feel connected and how I want to incorporate those elements into my life without losing my individuality. This approach has opened up dialogues where we can discuss our values and beliefs, making it easier to find common ground. Another thing many of us have found helpful is connecting with fellow Kunbi individuals who understand these struggles. Having even one person to share our experiences with can make all the difference. I found someone nearby who also grapples with family expectations; we started meeting up regularly. It’s been a relief to talk about our journeys, celebrate our heritage together, and brainstorm ways to navigate those tricky family dynamics while staying true to ourselves. It’s also important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to set boundaries. Many of us have had to learn how to say no or to express our needs without feeling guilty. It can be tough, especially when we feel the weight of our family's hopes and dreams on our shoulders, but asserting our own identities is crucial. What about you? How do you handle family expectations while staying true to your Kunbi identity? Sharing our experiences can help us all find a way to honor our heritage without losing ourselves.
