How do you navigate traditional expectations from family while trying to honor your identity as Kunbi?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the expectations from family while trying to honor our Kunbi identity can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced the pressure to conform to traditional roles, whether it's in marriage, career choices, or cultural practices, while also wanting to stay true to ourselves. It can be overwhelming at times. One thing that helped me was finding a way to communicate openly with my family about my identity. I started small, sharing snippets of my experiences and what being Kunbi means to me. It wasn't always easy, and there were moments of misunderstanding, but slowly, they began to see the importance of my journey. Sometimes, just having one honest conversation can start to bridge the gap between our traditional upbringing and our personal truth. Another approach that many of us find useful is connecting with others in our community who share similar experiences. I found someone nearby who also navigates these expectations, and we started meeting regularly. We share our stories, strategies, and even frustrations. Just knowing that someone else understands the unique challenges of being Kunbi has made it feel less isolating. It’s in these connections that we often find validation and support. It’s also important to carve out your own space within your identity. For instance, incorporating elements of our culture into our lives in a way that feels authentic can help. Whether it’s through food, music, or traditional crafts, embracing our heritage while also adding our personal twist can be empowering. This blend honors our roots while allowing us to express who we are today. Remember, it’s okay to feel conflicted at times. Many of us do. The pressure to meet family expectations can be heavy, but honoring our identity is equally important. Anyone else navigating this balance? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you find that sweet spot between tradition and authenticity.
