How do you navigate cultural expectations when they clash with your personal identity as a Kunbi?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural expectations as a Kunbi can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us have experienced the pressure to conform to traditions or roles that don’t quite resonate with who we are. It can be overwhelming, especially when our personal identities clash with the expectations from our families or communities. One thing that has helped me is finding ways to honor our rich cultural heritage while also being true to myself. For instance, I’ve started integrating aspects of our traditions into my own life in a way that feels authentic. Whether it’s cooking traditional dishes but adding my own twist or participating in festivals with a personal flair, it feels empowering to celebrate my culture on my own terms. Another approach some of us have found useful is having open conversations with family members about our experiences. It can be tough, but sharing our feelings about certain expectations can lead to deeper understanding. I remember having a heartfelt discussion with my family about how I wanted to pursue a different career path than what was traditionally expected. It wasn’t easy, but it opened the door for more honest conversations about our identities and what they mean to us. Many of us also find that connecting with fellow Kunbis who understand these struggles can be incredibly comforting. Just knowing there are others who face similar challenges can help ease the burden of isolation. I started meeting with a group of friends from our community, and we share our experiences navigating these cultural expectations. It’s been a game changer to have even just one person to talk to who truly gets it. Navigating the complexities of cultural identity can be challenging, but we can carve out spaces within our traditions that reflect our true selves. Anyone else feeling this tension? I’d love to hear how you’ve managed the balance between cultural expectations and your personal identity.
