Navigating family expectations while embracing my identity as Kunbi

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations while embracing our identity as Kunbi can sometimes feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know the struggle of wanting to honor our cultural roots while also carving out our own identities in a world that often wants to define us. It can be tough when family members have their own ideas about who we should be or how we should live our lives. One thing that has helped me is finding a balance between honoring my family's traditions and staying true to myself. I started small, like incorporating aspects of our cultural practices in my daily life while also expressing my individuality. For example, I might participate in family rituals but add my own twist — whether that's suggesting a new dish to share during celebrations or introducing modern music into traditional dance. This way, I feel connected to my roots while still embracing who I am. Another approach that many of us find useful is having open conversations with our families. I know it can be daunting, but gently sharing how certain expectations make us feel can lead to more understanding. I remember having a heart-to-heart with my parents about my career choices and how they differ from their expectations. It wasn't easy, but it opened doors for deeper conversations about our identities. Having that connection made me feel less alone and more supported in my journey. Sometimes, we just need a sounding board — a fellow Kunbi who understands the unique challenges we face. I found someone in my community who was navigating similar family pressures, and we started meeting up regularly. Sharing our experiences not only helped us cope but also reminded us that we’re not alone in this journey. Being a Kunbi means embracing our rich heritage, but it can also mean redefining what that looks like for ourselves. Anyone else feeling this push and pull? What strategies have you found helpful in navigating family expectations while staying true to your identity?
