Navigating expectations from family about my career choices as a Kumhar

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of expectations that come from our families, especially when it comes to our career choices as Kumhars. There’s this deep-rooted pride in our craft, but also a lot of pressure to uphold traditions that can sometimes feel stifling. You might find yourself torn between wanting to honor your family's legacy and pursuing your own passions or interests. One thing that really helped me was opening up a conversation with my family about my aspirations. I shared not just my dreams, but also how I see our art evolving in today’s world. Sometimes, they genuinely don’t realize that our skills can translate into modern opportunities. For instance, I started exploring pottery in contemporary design, and when I showed them my work, it sparked a real interest. It was a way to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, and it helped them see the value in my choices. Another approach some of us try is connecting with other Kumhars who are navigating similar paths. Having even one person in your life who truly understands this struggle can make a world of difference. I found someone in my community who is also balancing traditional expectations with personal goals. We started meeting up to share experiences and brainstorm ways to support each other. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this journey. The conversations can be tough, though. There are days when I feel overwhelmed by the fear of letting my family down. But I remind myself that it’s okay to carve out a path that feels right for me. It’s a process, and many of us are still figuring it out as we go. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you’re navigating family expectations around your career. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can change everything.
