Has anyone else experienced discrimination or stigma because of their background, and how do you cope with it?

Many of us in the Kumhar community know all too well the sting of discrimination or stigma because of our background. Whether it’s being judged for our heritage, facing stereotypes about our professions, or feeling sidelined in conversations, these experiences can really weigh us down. It’s frustrating and isolating, but sharing our stories can help us find strength together.
One thing that has helped me cope is connecting with others who understand what it feels like to be marginalized. I found a couple of people in my area who also identify as Kumhar, and we started meeting up for coffee. Just being able to talk openly about our experiences made a huge difference. It’s like we can share a language that others might not understand, which helps validate our feelings. If you haven’t already, consider reaching out to someone who shares your background.
Another approach that some of us have found useful is to engage in community events that celebrate our heritage. Whether it’s a local festival, a craft fair, or even a cooking class that highlights our traditional skills, immersing ourselves in our culture can be empowering. It reminds us of our strengths and the beauty of our identity, countering the negative messages we sometimes receive from the outside world.
It’s also okay to acknowledge the hurt and frustration that comes with stigma. Many of us have felt the exhaustion from having to explain our culture or defend our identity. During those tough days, I remind myself of the resilience in our community. Sharing personal stories, like the challenges we face in our everyday lives, can foster a sense of belonging that helps us navigate those feelings together.
Anyone else dealing with this? It would be great to hear how you cope and what’s helped you feel more connected to our community. Sometimes just talking about it with someone who truly gets it can change everything.
