How do you handle the stigma of our identity when meeting new people?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Meeting new people can be a daunting experience for many of us in the Kumhar community. We often carry the weight of stigma related to our identity, and that can make social interactions feel even more challenging. Whether it’s the fear of being misunderstood or facing judgment, these feelings are all too familiar. One thing that has helped me navigate these situations is finding common ground before diving into deeper conversations. Sometimes, sharing a bit about our cultural heritage or the craftsmanship associated with our identity can open the door to more meaningful discussions. People are often curious about our traditions, and this curiosity can create a bridge that helps ease any discomfort. Another approach I've found helpful is to be open about my experiences when the moment feels right. It can be as simple as saying, “I’m really proud of my Kumhar background, but I know some people don’t always understand.” This honesty can invite understanding rather than judgment, and many of us have found that it can lead to deeper connections with those who may not be familiar with our stories. It's also important to remember that not every interaction will be perfect. Some people may react in ways that feel dismissive or uncomfortable. That’s okay; it’s a part of the journey. Surrounding ourselves with supportive individuals who share similar experiences can make a significant difference. I once connected with someone in our community, and we began sharing our stories regularly. Just having that one person who truly gets it transformed how I approached new relationships. The stigma can feel heavy, but we don’t have to carry it alone. Anyone else navigating this? How do you manage the stigma when meeting new people? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
