Many of us in the Kumhar community have faced discrimination because of our identity, and it can feel incredibly isolating. Whether it’s being judged for our traditional practices, facing stereotypes about our work, or simply feeling marginalized in social situations, these experiences can weigh heavily on us. It's tough to navigate a world where our identity is misunderstood, and sometimes even rejected.
One thing that’s helped me is finding small ways to connect with our culture and celebrate it, even if others might not understand. I started sharing stories about our traditions with friends who are open-minded, and it’s surprising how many people actually want to learn. Sharing these aspects of our identity can spark meaningful conversations and help others see us in a new light. It can also be a reminder for ourselves that our heritage is something to be proud of, rather than ashamed of.
Another approach that many of us find beneficial is seeking support from others in our community. I found a few people nearby who also identify as Kumhar, and we started meeting up to share our experiences. Just knowing that I’m not alone in this journey has made such a difference. We talk about the discrimination we face, but we also celebrate our shared identity and support one another. Sometimes, having even one person who truly understands makes the hard days a bit easier.
Sometimes it feels like the world is against us, and those moments can be draining. But leaning into our community and finding ways to uplift each other is key. Have any of you found ways to cope with discrimination that have helped? I’m really interested in hearing your experiences and what’s worked for you.
