Navigating the expectations of family members while trying to embrace our own identity as Kumhar(Kummari)

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the expectations of family can feel like walking a tightrope, especially as we embrace our identity as Kumhar (Kummari). Many of us know that feeling of wanting to honor our roots while also carving our own paths. It's a balancing act that can often feel overwhelming. One thing that really helped me was finding ways to connect our traditional practices with my personal interests. For instance, when it comes to the art of pottery, I started exploring modern designs that blend traditional techniques with contemporary styles. Sharing these creations with my family became a bridge between us. They saw how I was honoring our heritage while expressing my individuality. This sparked some beautiful conversations about how we can adapt our customs to fit our evolving identities. Another approach that many of us try is setting boundaries around expectations. It can be tough to have those conversations, but expressing what feels right for us is essential. For example, if family members expect us to follow a certain career path, we might gently remind them of our passions and goals. Having even one person in our lives who truly gets it can make this process easier. I found someone nearby who understands these challenges, and we started meeting regularly to share our experiences and support each other. It’s amazing how much lighter the load feels when you’re not carrying it alone. We also face the challenge of cultural narratives that can feel restrictive. Many of us have grown up hearing stories about what it means to be a Kumhar, and while those stories are important, it’s equally vital to create our own. Sharing our unique experiences within the community can help us redefine what being a Kumhar means today. It can be liberating to hear different perspectives and realize we’re not alone in this journey. Anyone else navigating family expectations while trying to embrace your Kumhar identity? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands what we’re going through can make all the difference. Would love to hear your experiences and what’s worked for you!
