The weight of stigma: Do you find yourself hiding your identity from others?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of stigma all too well. It can feel like a heavy cloak that we wear, one that makes every interaction feel like a potential landmine. Whether it's our mental health struggles, neurodiversity, or chronic illness, we often find ourselves navigating a world that doesn’t always understand or accept us. One thing that helped me was finding a small group of people who share similar experiences. Just having those few trusted souls to talk to made a world of difference. It’s comforting to know there are others who get it, who understand the anxiety that comes with revealing our true selves. We started meeting regularly, and it became a safe space to be vulnerable. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have even one person who knows what it feels like to hide parts of ourselves. Another approach some of us try is gradually opening up to those we trust. It can be terrifying to let someone in, especially when we fear judgment. But starting with small disclosures—like sharing a little about our experiences—can pave the way for deeper connections. You might find that the more we share, the lighter that weight of stigma feels. Sometimes, just having one honest conversation can be the first step toward feeling seen and understood. We also have to remind ourselves that it’s okay to have boundaries. Not everyone needs to know every detail of our lives. Protecting our peace is crucial, and that means being selective about who we share our truths with. It’s a balancing act that many of us navigate daily, but it gets easier with practice. How are you all handling the pressure to hide your identity? Sometimes just talking about it with someone who understands makes all the difference. Would love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you!
