How do you cope with the stigma associated with being Koeri in your community?

Many of us in the Koeri community know all too well the weight of stigma that can come with our identity. Whether it’s the whispers in the background, the assumptions people make about us, or the outright discrimination we face, it can feel exhausting. But as we navigate this together, we’ve found a few ways to cope and support one another.
One thing that really helps is finding a safe space where we can express our feelings without judgment. In our community, sharing our experiences can be incredibly validating. You might find that talking about the specific challenges we face—like the pressure to conform to stereotypes or the fear of rejection—can lighten the emotional load. I remember connecting with someone who shared a similar background; just knowing we weren’t alone made a huge difference. We started meeting regularly to share our thoughts and experiences, and it created a sense of belonging that eased some of that stigma.
Another approach many of us try is educating ourselves and others about our culture and identity. This doesn’t mean we have to become advocates for every misunderstanding we encounter, but sharing our stories and perspectives can help break down misconceptions. Sometimes, just a small conversation can shift someone’s view, even if it’s just one person at a time. We might also find comfort in discussing our experiences with family members who understand our struggles. Having that support system can make a world of difference.
It’s also important to practice self-compassion. Recognizing that it’s okay to feel hurt or frustrated by the stigma can be empowering. We remind ourselves that our identity is something to be proud of, and that embracing who we are can be a radical act of defiance against the stigma.
Anyone else dealing with this? Would love to hear what you’ve tried or how you’ve connected with others who understand. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference.
