Navigating the expectations of being the head of the household in a matrilineal society

Many of us in the Khasi community know the complexities of being at the forefront of our households, especially in a matrilineal society where expectations can feel both empowering and overwhelming. The weight of carrying family traditions, responsibilities, and the cultural significance of our roles can sometimes leave us feeling isolated, even when we’re surrounded by family.
One thing that often helps is having open conversations with other heads of households about our experiences. Sharing our stories can reveal that we’re not alone in feeling the pressure to uphold family values while also navigating modern challenges. I’ve found relief in discussing these pressures with peers who truly understand — just knowing that others are facing similar situations can lighten the load.
Another approach is to embrace our unique strengths as women leading our families. We have a rich cultural heritage that empowers us, and leaning into that can help us find our voice. For example, hosting family gatherings not only reinforces our roles but also allows us to share the beautiful traditions of our culture. When we come together to cook traditional meals or celebrate festivals, it strengthens our family bonds and creates a supportive environment where everyone can express their feelings and expectations.
We might also face challenges when balancing our responsibilities with our personal aspirations. It can be difficult to carve out time for ourselves while managing household duties and expectations from both sides of the family. One strategy that has worked for me is scheduling regular "me time" to recharge, whether it’s through reading, meditating, or even just enjoying a quiet cup of tea. This time not only helps me feel more centered but also better equips me to handle the responsibilities that come with being a head of the household.
Anyone else navigating these expectations? It can feel like a lot sometimes, but sharing our experiences might just help us find that sense of community and support we all need. Would love to hear what’s worked for you in balancing these roles!
