Navigating family expectations around traditional roles and responsibilities as a Khasi

Navigating family expectations can be really tough, especially when it comes to the traditional roles and responsibilities we carry as part of the Khasi community. Many of us feel the weight of these expectations, and it can sometimes feel like we're walking a tightrope between honoring our heritage and living authentically. One thing that has helped me is having open conversations with family members about what it means to be Khasi in today’s world. I know it can be daunting, but sharing our thoughts about gender roles and responsibilities can sometimes lead to surprising conversations. For instance, when I expressed my desire to pursue a career instead of focusing solely on traditional family roles, my parents shared their own dreams and aspirations from their youth. Finding common ground helped bridge the generational gap and eased some of the pressure I felt. Another approach some of us try is connecting with others in our community who are navigating similar challenges. I found a small group of friends who are also balancing their personal ambitions with family expectations. We meet regularly to share our experiences and support one another. Just having that group made me realize I’m not alone in feeling conflicted about these roles. It’s comforting to know there are others who get it and are facing the same struggles. We also need to remember that many of our traditions are beautiful and valuable, but it’s okay to redefine what they look like in our lives. For example, I’ve incorporated aspects of Khasi culture into my career by promoting our traditions through my work. This way, I can honor my roots while also carving out my own path — a balance that many of us are striving for.
