Finding the right words to share your IVF journey with friends and family who just don't understand

Many of us know the struggle of trying to explain our IVF journey to friends and family who just can’t quite grasp what we’re going through. It can feel isolating when they don’t understand the emotional toll, the physical challenges, or the sheer complexity of the process. We might feel like we’re speaking a different language, and that disconnect can be really hard to navigate.
One thing that helped me was finding a way to share not just the facts, but also the feelings. Instead of just saying, “I’m doing IVF,” I started expressing what it feels like — the hope, the anxiety, the heartache. For example, I might say, “This process is really overwhelming for me. Some days I feel hopeful, and other days I just feel crushed by the weight of it all.” This approach often invites more understanding and compassion from those who care about us.
Another approach some of us have found helpful is to provide resources, like articles or videos that explain IVF in a more relatable way. Sometimes, it’s easier for people to grasp the journey when they can see it through someone else’s lens. I shared a video with my close friends that illustrated the emotional rollercoaster, and it opened up a dialogue that felt much more supportive.
It’s also important to lean on those who do get it. I found someone in the community who’s going through a similar journey, and we've started sharing our experiences regularly. It’s been a game-changer to have someone who truly understands the ups and downs of IVF. If you can find even one person to connect with, it can make the hard days feel a little bit lighter.
Anyone else grappling with how to share your IVF journey? Sometimes just talking to someone who really understands makes all the difference. Would love to hear what’s worked for you!
