How do you navigate the tension between traditional Traveller values and modern expectations from society?

Navigating the tension between our traditional Traveller values and the expectations of modern society can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us feel the pull of our rich culture and heritage, while also grappling with the pressures to fit into a world that often doesn't understand or appreciate our way of life. It’s not easy, and the struggle can sometimes leave us feeling isolated. One thing that has really helped me is finding ways to honor our traditions while still engaging with the outside world. For instance, I’ve started incorporating elements of our culture into my daily life, like using our language when I can and sharing stories from our history with friends who are curious. This connection to our roots not only keeps our culture alive but also helps bridge the gap when we interact with those who might have misconceptions about us. It can be empowering to explain our customs and values, turning potential misunderstandings into moments of connection. Another approach some of us try is to create supportive spaces among our own community. Whether it's through gathering for traditional meals, celebrating holidays, or just having open discussions about our experiences, these moments remind us that we’re not alone in this. Recently, I found a small group of fellow Travellers who meet up regularly to talk about the challenges we face. Sharing our experiences has made a world of difference — it’s comforting to know that we’re all navigating similar waters. It’s also important to acknowledge the pressure that modern society puts on us to conform. Many of us feel torn between wanting to maintain our identity and the need to adapt to fit into a world that often seems at odds with who we are.
