Navigating relationships with non-Travellers – do you feel understood?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating relationships with non-Travellers can be tough, can’t it? Many of us have felt that sense of isolation or misunderstanding when we’re interacting with people who don’t share our background or experiences. It’s a unique struggle balancing our identities while trying to be ourselves in a world that sometimes doesn’t get it. One thing I’ve found helpful is to be open about our culture when we’re engaging with non-Travellers. Sharing stories about our traditions, values, and ways of life can spark curiosity and understanding. For example, when I mention the importance of family gatherings or the way we celebrate milestones, it often leads to deeper conversations. It’s a way to bridge that gap and show them that there’s so much richness in our culture that they might not be aware of. Another approach is to seek out spaces where we can connect with others who share our experiences. I remember meeting someone who was also navigating friendships with non-Travellers, and we started chatting regularly. Just having that one person who understands the complexities of living with our identity helped me feel less alone. It’s amazing how sharing our stories with someone who gets it can bring a sense of relief and validation. We also face moments of frustration, especially when stereotypes come into play. Many of us have felt the sting of being judged solely on our identity. It can be disheartening, but I find that staying true to ourselves and surrounding ourselves with people who respect our heritage makes a difference. When we feel empowered in our identity, it becomes easier to educate others about who we really are. Anyone else feeling the weight of this challenge? It’s always nice to hear how others are navigating relationships with non-Travellers. What strategies have worked for you? Sometimes just sharing our experiences can help us all feel a bit more understood.
