Navigating the tension between traditional Traveller values and modern societal expectations

Many of us from the Traveller community know how challenging it can be to balance our traditional values with the pressures of modern society. One thing that has helped me is talking to others who understand this tension. Sharing stories about our experiences with family expectations, such as marriage traditions or how we raise our children, can be incredibly validating. It’s comforting to know that we’re not alone in navigating these challenges. I remember connecting with someone who felt the same way about wanting to honor our heritage while also seeking opportunities in the wider world. We began meeting regularly to discuss ways to bridge that gap, and it made a huge difference in how I view my identity. Another approach many of us take is finding ways to incorporate our values into modern life creatively. Sometimes, it’s also about setting boundaries with those who may not understand our way of life. It can be tough when friends or family members push for us to adopt a more conventional lifestyle.
