Many of us know the frustration of being dismissed because our disabilities aren’t visible. It can feel incredibly isolating when we’re met with skepticism or indifference from others who just don’t understand what we’re going through. Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting a battle on multiple fronts—against our own struggles and against the misconceptions of those around us.
One thing that has helped me navigate this frustration is finding ways to express my experiences more clearly. I’ve started keeping a journal where I write down my feelings and daily challenges. It not only helps me process what I’m going through, but it also serves as a reminder of my struggles when I encounter disbelief. Sharing parts of this journal with someone who gets it — even if it’s just a friend or a fellow community member — can make a huge difference. Having someone acknowledge our experiences can validate our feelings and remind us we’re not alone in this.
Another approach many of us try is to educate those around us, when we feel up to it. Whether it’s sharing articles, personal stories, or even just having a conversation about invisible disabilities, it can sometimes help bridge that gap of understanding. Of course, this isn’t always easy, especially when we’re already feeling drained. But even small exchanges can plant seeds of understanding. And sometimes, just having one person in our life who truly gets it can lighten the load, making those hard days a little easier.
It’s also important to give ourselves grace when we feel overwhelmed by the reactions of others. Many of us deal with this frustration daily, and it’s okay to feel hurt or angry. It’s part of the experience. Finding a supportive space, whether it’s online or in-person, where we can vent and share our stories can be incredibly healing. I once found a group of people who meet regularly to discuss their experiences with invisible disabilities, and just being in that space was a breath of fresh air.
So, anyone else dealing with this? How do you cope with the frustration of being dismissed? I’d love to hear what’s helped you on your journey.
