How do you handle days when your invisible disability feels particularly overwhelming?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We all have those days when our invisible disabilities feel like they’re weighing us down, don’t we? It can be exhausting, overwhelming, and sometimes downright isolating. Many of us know the struggle of just getting out of bed or facing the world when our bodies or minds aren’t cooperating. On those tough days, it can help to have a few strategies in our back pocket. One thing that really helps me is to create a “comfort plan.” This is just a simple list of activities or distractions that bring me some peace. It might be curling up with a favorite show, diving into a good book, or even just listening to calming music. The idea is to have a go-to list ready for when everything feels too heavy. I also try to keep it flexible — some days, a warm bath might be what I need, while other days, just chatting with a friend might lift my spirits. Speaking of friends, I’ve found that having even one person in my life who truly understands this struggle makes a world of difference. When I feel overwhelmed, I reach out to them, and just sharing how I feel can lighten the load significantly. Another approach some of us find helpful is to break our day into smaller, manageable chunks. Instead of thinking about everything we need to get done, we can focus on one small task at a time. It could be as simple as getting dressed, making a cup of tea, or stepping outside for a few minutes. Celebrating those tiny victories can remind us that we’re still moving forward, even if it’s at a snail's pace. Lastly, it’s important to give ourselves permission to feel whatever we’re feeling. There’s no right or wrong way to handle these overwhelming days. Acknowledging our emotions, whether it’s sadness, frustration, or even anger, can be a powerful step. And if you feel comfortable, sharing those feelings with someone who understands can help ease that isolation we often feel. Anyone else dealing with this kind of heaviness today? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. I’d love to hear what helps you on your tougher days!
