How do you navigate the expectations of your family while staying true to your craft as a smith?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Inadan community know how challenging it can be to navigate family expectations while staying true to our craft as smiths. It often feels like we’re walking a fine line between honoring our heritage and pursuing our passion. Family traditions run deep, and there can be pressure to conform to those expectations, especially when it comes to the art of smithing. One thing that has helped me is having open conversations with my family about what our craft means to me. Sharing the stories behind my work—why I choose certain designs or materials—can help them see that my approach is not just a personal choice but a continuation of our shared culture in a way that resonates with me. It can be tough, but many of us have found that expressing our passion helps bridge the gap between tradition and individuality. Another approach is creating small projects that blend traditional techniques with our unique styles. For example, I started incorporating more modern elements into my pieces while still using the skills passed down through generations. This way, I can share my progress with my family and show them how I’m honoring our roots while carving out my own identity as a smith. Connecting with fellow Inadan smiths can also be incredibly valuable. Having someone who understands the challenge of balancing family expectations with personal passion makes a world of difference. I found a close friend within the community who shares similar experiences. We meet regularly to discuss our work and the struggles we face, and it’s been a relief to know I’m not alone in this journey. How about you? Anyone else feeling that tug between family expectations and your craft? What strategies have you found helpful in navigating this delicate balance?
