Navigating family expectations while trying to uphold our smithing traditions can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know the pressure that comes from wanting to honor our craft and heritage, all while listening to the voices of our families who may have different visions for our futures. It can be overwhelming at times, especially when we feel caught between our passion for smithing and what our families envision for us.
One thing that has helped me is having open conversations with my family about what smithing means to me. I’ve found that when I share my journey—why I love working with metal, the stories behind our traditions, and the joy it brings me—they often start to see the value in what I do. It can be daunting, but many of us have discovered that a heartfelt discussion can bridge the gap between generations.
Another approach is to involve family members in the process. A few years ago, I invited my younger sibling to join me in the workshop for a day. We spent time forging simple pieces, and I shared the history and significance behind our techniques. That day not only strengthened our bond but also helped them appreciate the craft and the traditions we hold dear. Sometimes, just having one family member who understands your passion can lighten the load of expectations.
It’s normal to feel conflicted. There might be days when the pressure feels too heavy, and it’s easy to doubt our paths. However, I’ve found solace in connecting with others in our community who share these experiences. Talking to someone who gets it can make a world of difference—whether it’s sharing tips on how to balance family expectations with our love for smithing or simply venting about the struggles we face.
Anyone else feeling this way about family expectations and our craft? I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated this journey. Sometimes just talking to someone who understands can help us feel less alone.
