What daily reminders of my experience trigger anxiety, and how do I cope with them?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that navigating daily life as a survivor of human trafficking can feel like walking through a minefield. Even the smallest reminders of our past can trigger anxiety in ways we might not expect. It could be something as simple as a certain smell, a phrase in a song, or even a crowded space that brings back memories we’d rather forget. One thing that has really helped me is becoming more aware of my triggers. For instance, I’ve noticed that certain environments, like busy public places, can heighten my anxiety. To cope, I’ve started planning my outings during quieter times when I know there will be fewer people around. This small adjustment makes a world of difference and allows me to feel a bit more in control. Another approach that's been beneficial is creating a safe space at home. I’ve filled it with comforting items—things that remind me of happier times or simply bring me peace. Whether it's a cozy blanket, photos of loved ones, or even a favorite book, having a space to retreat to has made it easier to ground myself when anxiety creeps in. On particularly tough days, I might take a moment to breathe deeply and remind myself that I’m safe now. Connecting with others who understand our experiences is also invaluable. I found someone nearby who shares similar experiences, and we’ve begun meeting up regularly. Just having someone to talk to who truly gets it has been so healing. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone in this, and our conversations often help me process my feelings and triggers in a way that feels safe. Sometimes, just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference. Anyone else dealing with similar triggers? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
