Have you experienced judgment from others, and how do you cope with it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know firsthand how tough it can be to deal with judgment from others. Whether it’s the well-meaning but misguided comments, the looks of pity, or outright disbelief about our experiences, it can feel overwhelming. We’ve been through so much already, and then facing judgment can really add to our emotional burden. One thing that has helped me is to remind myself that people often don’t understand what we’ve gone through. Many of us carry invisible scars, and unless someone has lived our reality, it’s difficult for them to grasp the complexities of our experiences. When we encounter judgment, it can be helpful to take a moment to breathe and remember that their reactions often say more about them than they do about us. Another approach some of us find useful is surrounding ourselves with supportive people who truly get it. Connecting with others who have similar experiences can be a game-changer. For instance, I found a small group of survivors who meet regularly to share our stories. Just having that space to express ourselves without fear of judgment has made a world of difference. We validate each other’s feelings and remind ourselves that it’s okay to be on this journey at our own pace. Sometimes, when we feel judged, it’s also helpful to focus on self-compassion. We’ve faced enough negativity in the past, and treating ourselves with kindness can counteract that. Acknowledge your feelings—whether it's anger, sadness, or frustration—and know that they are valid. It might help to write down what we wish we could say to those who judge us, even if we never share it. This can be a powerful way to process our emotions and reclaim our narrative. Anyone else dealing with this kind of judgment? It can feel isolating, but sometimes just talking to one person who understands changes everything. What’s helped you cope when others don’t seem to get it?
