How do you handle the stigma and misconceptions people have about homelessness in your day-to-day interactions?

Many of us have faced the stigma and misconceptions surrounding homelessness, and it can be really tough. Whether it’s the judgmental glances from strangers or the outright assumptions people make about our lives, it’s easy to feel isolated and misunderstood. We might even find ourselves preparing responses for those moments, bracing for the questions and comments that can feel so harsh.
One thing that helps me is to reclaim the narrative when I can. When someone makes an ignorant comment, I try to share a little bit about my story. For example, if someone assumes I’m homeless because of a lack of effort, I might tell them about the challenges I’ve faced, like the systemic issues or health problems that contributed to my situation. This can sometimes lead to a more meaningful conversation, humanizing our experiences and breaking down those misconceptions.
Another approach is leaning into my community. Finding others who understand what we're going through can be a huge relief. I started connecting with a few people who are also navigating this experience, and we’ve been able to share our stories and support each other. Having someone to talk to who truly gets it—who understands the weight of stigma—can lighten the load we carry. We’ve even organized small meet-ups to share resources and strategies for dealing with difficult interactions in public.
It’s also okay to set boundaries when we need to. If someone’s attitude is particularly negative or judgmental, we don’t owe them our energy or explanation. Protecting our mental space is crucial, especially when we’re already facing so much. You might find that taking a step back or surrounding yourself with supportive people can make a world of difference.
Anyone else feeling this struggle? How do you navigate those tough moments? Sometimes, just sharing our experiences can help lift some of that weight.
