Adjusting to different environments: how do you find a sense of safety or comfort when you’re constantly on the move?

Many of us know what it feels like to be in a constant state of transition, moving from one place to another, trying to find a sense of safety and comfort in environments that can feel so unpredictable. It can be overwhelming and sometimes even isolating. When we’re on the move, it’s easy to feel like we’re just existing rather than truly living.
One thing that’s helped me is creating small rituals that ground me, no matter where I am. It might be as simple as taking a few deep breaths when I settle into a new space or finding a quiet corner to sit for a moment. Even bringing a familiar item, like a favorite book or a piece of clothing, can offer a sense of home amidst the chaos. We can carry those little reminders of comfort with us, and they can really make a difference in moments of uncertainty.
Another approach some of us try is to stay connected with others who share similar experiences. There’s something powerful about finding someone nearby who understands the unique challenges we face. I met someone in a shelter who also struggles with finding comfort in new environments. We started checking in with each other regularly, sharing tips and just listening. Having that connection made the hard days feel a little lighter.
You might also find that creating a routine, even a loose one, can help. Whether it’s visiting the same park at a certain time or checking in at a favorite community resource, those little touches of familiarity can ease the discomfort of constant change. Many of us find solace in the predictability of certain places or activities, even if they're temporary.
It’s not easy navigating this lifestyle, and the feelings of insecurity can be heavy. But having even one person who truly gets it, or finding those small moments of comfort, can shift our perspective. Anyone else dealing with the challenges of finding safety in new environments? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you and how you’ve built your own sense of comfort on the move.
