Navigating cultural expectations while trying to be true to myself as a Garo

Navigating the expectations that come with being Garo while trying to stay true to ourselves can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us feel the pressure to uphold traditions and cultural values, but at the same time, we’re also trying to carve out our own identities in a rapidly changing world. It’s a balancing act that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and sometimes even isolated.
One thing that has helped me is finding spaces where I can openly discuss my experiences as a Garo. Connecting with others who understand the cultural expectations we face has been a game changer. For instance, I met a fellow Garo who was struggling with similar feelings about family expectations and personal aspirations. We started chatting regularly, and just having someone to share these struggles with made a world of difference. It reminded me that I’m not alone in this journey and that it’s okay to question traditions while still honoring them.
Another approach that some of us find helpful is setting boundaries around cultural obligations. This can be tough, especially when family or community members have strong expectations. It’s about finding that sweet spot where we can participate in traditions that resonate with us while also being honest about what doesn’t sit right. For example, I’ve learned to say “no” to certain events that don’t align with my values, which has allowed me to focus on the aspects of my culture that truly bring me joy.
It’s also empowering to explore our cultural identity on our own terms. Many of us have unique stories and perspectives that can enrich the Garo narrative. Whether it’s through art, writing, or even just sharing our day-to-day experiences, expressing ourselves can help us feel more connected to our roots while still embracing who we are as individuals.
Anyone else navigating this complex landscape? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it changes everything. I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you find that balance between cultural expectations and being true to yourself.
